Guided By Voices @ Irving Plaza, New Years (Review)

(photo taken by TAC)
Bob Pollard is an interesting character in the pages of Rock and Roll history. It's not that he's accomplished more than most songwriters who were raised on the 4-track and shamelessly shelf a collection of shoeboxes full of tape recordings. He's published thousands of songs, miniature Rock operas, and toured the world extensively, all under the influence of enormous alcohol consumption. One can't really pin-point his lyrical style, as he throws words together the same way he blends chord progressions. It's a "anything goes" philosophy. But a prolific songwriter like himself would have to change style at some point, whether it's the audience, or the band members, or his gaining success. Pollard achieved notoriety after the first batch of GBV albums, only to replace the original line-up with a group of better-equipped musicians. He did start to write simpler love songs, less outrageous and more accessible lyrics when the band switched over. You could tell he was chasing after a different career path, more aligned with bands like R.E.M. or Pearl Jam. But some old-school GBV fans rebelled against it, leaving Pollard to dismantle the name- "Guided by Voices" and record a shit-ton of solo albums over the years. This move dug him deeper to the underground as a cult icon. We all sort of fell off the solo path, waiting for a GBV reunion of sorts. So this past year, was the "classic line-up" reunion year, bringing back Tobin Sprout and Mitch Mitchell to the stage. Neither are exceptional guitarists, but the reunion took Pollard from his solo-self-indulgence back to a band-leader position, making this a historic reunion. I have seen the many versions of this band, and I've liked every show I've attended. What I haven't seen before, till this past new years, was his unsurpassable tolerance to beer, tequila and whatever other substances this guy was on. We've all seen him wasted, but during the third act, he resembled Mel Gibson on crack, more than the fun-going Jim Morrison drunk he'd been known for. The last encore was full of long non-sensical rants ("muthafucka, shitter, fuck, shitfuckermuthashitfucker?") and incorrect song introductions ("ok Radio City.. are you ready for the next song?"), which made for a good laugh, but the anger was so real, I'm not sure it was supposed to be funny. This guy could've been shitting himself through a nervous breakdown on stage, we couldn't tell. It was the first time I'd seen Pollard turn into 'the mean drunk'. They played more songs, missing the new years countdown, until the inevitable- "We have to stop playing, we're too drunk." And that was it, the show was over. They had busted through a 3 hour set, I don't know how many songs (alot), the club was destroyed. At one point during the show, I witnessed four dudes vomiting in the bathroom. You could say, they went out with a bang, if this was the last GBV show for a while. But I get the feeling, Pollard enjoys the rockstar life (way too much), and the end won't be anytime soon.
I would like to see Pollard in a drinking competition with Keith Richards, Ozzy Osbourne, or Motley Crue. It'd make a fun-tastic reality show!

Black Swan (Darren Aronofsky)

Sensational, brilliant and psychologically extraordinary. Aronofsky has outdone himself. He may have chosen this script, due to the comparison between his own inner demons that inspire to compete against himself, as every movie he makes gets better and better. There are still cinematic and thematic similarities to The Wrestler, as odd as that sounds, entering the world of Ballet from a documentarian's perspective. He is definitely moving forward with giant steps into the round-table of virtuosic legendary filmmakers. I wouldn't be surprised if this movie sweeps the award season, and they might as well mail the best-actress award to Natalie Portman in advance. She's definitely earned it. Black Swan is the modern day Rosemary's Baby. It's cutting edge, without slasher film cheap shots or fancy studio trickery to get the character's dementia across. This is one hell of a mind-fuck. Bravo, 5 stars, etc etc etc..............
