It’s a truism of amorous and romantic relationships that dysfunctional ones usually don’t end for good until something better comes along to replace them. Iridesense’ forte is their unique ability to express those emotions in song. For lead singer/bassist Tara Eberle’s band- formed as a project with blues guitarist Rob Viccari and Rush-descendant hard rock drummer Richard Drouin as a parallel to bands like The Indigo Girls, The Bangles, and Blondie, which had progressively come to be dominated by her songwriting partner/brother Rick Eberle- became not just an escape route from a dead end music scene in there hometown of Long Island, New York, but an entirely new wave of singalong anthems for the next generation of MTV band-wannabes. But Iridesense meets their contemporaries, and matches their influences with an astounding degree.
Their latest release- A TRIP CALLED LIFE pulls all the parts together in a stirring display of teeth, claws, fuzzed-out distortion and catchy melodies, sung with ethereal sweetness- an instantly recognizable sonic trademark layered on like feathery blankets strewn with sand. This impenetrable explosion of id teases and rocks, relaxing and tightening its grip around a soft, firm center, whether wiggling like a funky worm on a hook (“History in the making”), thundering through psychedelic 80’s glam pop (“Rockstar”, “Faster”), ripping apart late Sonic Youthy radio singles (“Alternate Reality”), deconstructing Beatlisms, or rather Oasis-isms (“Forever”), or accessing old fashioned country-rock ballads (“The One”). A TRIP CALLED LIFE is indicative of how much more accomplished the group has become over the years of extensive touring and prolific song writing during their entire career. Flirty, sexy and stocked with enigmas, A TRIP CALLED LIFE turns unselfconsciousness into a multi-faceted blast of female personality on record. I highly recommend this release to any music lover that appreciates the quality of a good tune, and more importantly, melodies that make you wanna sing your heart out while you’re stuck in traffic on the Long Island Expressway.
