The Suck it Easy Band

The big question for present-day rock musicians isn’t how to live without capitalism, but how to live within it. Suck it Easy have always found a way. The Farmingdale based big-band relies on self-activated outreach programs to get to the fans who might not hear it on mainstream radio, implementing schemes like Easytown radio (their own hysterically genius radio station), and the infamous Easytown Estate parties, which I have had the pleasure of attending and taking part of. (If you were there, you know what the hell I’m talking about!) The group provides a remarkable example of just how far the concept of novelty rock can stretch. The group was formed in the late 90’s, by Godfather of the Long Island music scene- Tim Easy (AKA - “the Marlon Brando of Rock”), and his computer savvy partner Mike Zinn (Professor Zee), who joined forces when they unexpectedly found themselves living in the same building, which inhabited the now-defunct Deep Sea studios (check out the new studio- Sanctuary Creek). From that building- the Easytown Estate, they built the Suck it Easy empire, with the help of (multi-instrumentalist) Phish inspired guitar- Rick Birmingham, and Steve Gadd/Dave Weckl influenced drummer- Balls Deep, a full-on horn section, and occasionally, the Tim Easy backup singers.

At first, Suck it Easy’s superior arty live shtick, sets utilizing celebrity roasts, mocking song-titles like “Suck it Easy like Sunday Morning” and changing The Eagle's “Take it Easy” to what became their ballyhooed theme song “Suck it Easy!”, keeping the band firmly ingrained among suburban and downtown New Yorker types the world over. And yet, the posturing is gravitated by songs which, despite unconventional instrumentation and audacious geekatude (Tim Easy is one of the few record collectors rivaling my billion dollar collection), they’re untamed cover versions of classic rock songs are unstoppably spectacular.

In short, although their clever and outrageous live act has more in common with seeing a 1940’s big band performing Pop standards, they personify the concept of ‘Do it yourself’. They’re also surprisingly prolific, releasing a 4 CD box set during the middle of their career.

Over the years, Suck It Easy’s repertoire has grown in width and well in length, and now even includes serious numbers featuring singer-songwriter vocalist- Jeff Regan.

Though still buoyant and quirky, Suck It Easy is somewhat less like the average cover band, and more like Performance Art. Sure, they might be sucking it easy when they play, but they’re not through growing yet, making this tremendous band one of the most exciting experiences you’ll ever witness!
